LE GRAND – The Union girls basketball team recently marked their first and second wins of the season in a pair of back-to-back road games.

The team first hit the road to take on the East Marshall Mustangs in Le Grand on Tuesday, Jan. 7. The Knights were taking on a Mustang team that had two more wins than them on the season, but looked to come out with momentum.

The Mustangs came out ready and built a 6-0 lead just two minutes into the game. The Knights responded. Senior Lily Lorenzen got the scoring started for the Knights, leading a fast break that ended with a layup. That scene would be repeated throughout the night. The Knights defense added extra pressure on the Mustangs.

After the first quarter, the Knights clung to an 11-10 lead and stretched the lead to five by halftime.

Union entered the second half looking to create more separation and they did just that – outscoring the Mustangs 14-8 in the third quarter to enter the fourth quarter with a 33-22 lead.

The Knights continued the defensive pressure and made timely shots, securing a 51-34 victory – their first win of the 2024-25 season.

Lorenzen led the Knights in scoring, collecting 22 points. Junior Addie Pospisil added seven while junior Neeley Hennings added six of her own.

Junior Reagan Glenn led the Knights on the boards, fighting for nine rebounds during the game. Lorenzen added six and freshmen Reese Anderson added five as well.

A key difference in the game was turnovers. The Knights had eight steals and created 18 Mustang turnovers, while notching just five of their own.

Two evenings later on Jan. 9, Union added another win on the season by defeating Columbus Catholic 49-47 in overtime while playing the Sailors in Waterloo.

Entering this past week, the Knights were 2-11 on the season and set to face Dike-New Hartford at home on Tuesday (Jan. 14) before hosting conference foe Wapsie Valley (6-5) tonight, Friday, Jan. 17.

Tipoff is set for 6:15 p.m. against the Warriors.
