Redhawks earn Iowa Star-South conference championship, land six on All-Conference lists

TRAER – Under first year head coach Dalton Hulme, North Tama baseball ended the 2023-24 season with not only a winning record (15-12) but with the Iowa Star Conference All-South Division championship.

The Redhawks went 15-12 overall, and 10-5 in the conference by beating out Baxter (8-7) and Collins-Maxwell (8-7) which tied for second. In the postseason, North Tama advanced through the first round by beating Springville 10-2 before losing to Maquoketa Valley 4-3 in the second round.

Redhawks Kolt Knaack and Kayler Morris received All-Conference first team honors.

At the plate, Knaack notched a .324 average in his junior season including four doubles and two triples, while batting in 23 runs, scoring 17 times, and stealing 23 bases. As the team’s catcher, he made only one error across 166 chances and threw out seven attempted base stealers.

Morris, a sophomore, was an outfield pick. He had a .302 average including one double and one triple, 13 runs batted in, 22 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases. In the outfield, he had a perfect fielding percentage – notching zero errors across 36 total chances.

North Tama pitcher Josh Dostal along with infielders Gavin Rausch and Henry Hansen earned second team picks this season.

Dostal hit .293 with 14 runs batted in, 20 runs scored, and 22 stolen bases. On the mound, the junior pitcher was 3-1 with a 1.85 ERA, striking out 39 and walking six

Rausch, also a junior, hit .361 with 12 runs batted in and 15 runs scored. He led the team in stolen bases with 24.

In his final season, Hansen, a senior, hit .275 with 11 runs batted in and 11 runs scored. As the team’s starting pitcher, he had a 6-4 record and a 3.00 ERA, striking out 65 and walking 33.

Rounding out the Redhawks’ All-Conference selections this year, senior Tyler Popelka earned honorable mention.
