Watson to return to state meet
Abi Watson qualified for her third Iowa High School State Cross Country Championships on Thursday after recording a fourth-place finish at a Class 1A girls’ state qualifier here.
Watson, who was fifth at state last year and also qualified as a sophomore, will get one last chance in the state’s finale after posting a time of 16 minutes, 18.20 seconds.
Shelby Reicks of Turkey Valley won the race in 15:38.50. Watson was 5 seconds back of runner-up Lauren Block of Tripoli and just less than 3 seconds off South Winneshiek’s Felicity Taylor.
The top 10 individuals and top three teams advance to the Nov. 1 state meet at Lakeside Municpal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.
BCLUW’s Becca Steckelberg was 16th overall in 17:06.40 and her teammate Amelia Tonner was 20th in 17:17.60. The Comets were 10th in the team standings with 243 points. The three automatic qualifiers were team champion and eighth-ranked South Winneshiek (109), Starmont (116) and Mason City Newman Catholic (120).
In the boys’ race, BCLUW’s Tanner Teske led the way in 43rd with a time of 18:37. Brian Zobel led North Tama in 89th overall.
