The Dengler Domain: Rivalries

With the Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa game on Saturday, state rivalries are back. Next week the biggest football game in the state of Iowa with the Cyclones and Hawkeyes happens. Rivalries are fun, and history proves rivalries have been and will always be at the forefront of American psyche. I am here to determine who won each rivalry.

DC vs. Marvel

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, the Joker, and Lex Luthor make all great characters in DC Universe. The Justice League dominates this comic book franchise, but I am not a fan. Only a little green rock beats Superman, and Batman is a rich playboy. This does not make fun superheroes. Marvel wipes the floor against DC. Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and the X-Men are better characters. Doctor Doom, Green Goblin, and Magneto makes memorable bad guys. This Marvel roster of characters have greater depth and more diverse set of personalities.

Star Wars vs. Star Trek

These sci-fi television and film excursions have battled each other since Luke Skywalker appeared on screen in 1977. While Star Trek covers the intellectual side of space, Star Wars has the space action. It is a close call between these two franchises, but Star Trek wins this out of our world battle. Being around for fifty years has currency in today’s world, and Star Trek has this currency. Another upside for Star Trek is traveling to new planets fuels the American love of exploration. With the reboot of this franchise, Star Trek continues to take humans to places no man has gone before, space, the final frontier.

McDonald’s vs. Burger King

The Big Mac vs. The Whopper. The battle to satisfy every American’s fast food craving. While Burger King quietly rose on my preferred fast food locations list in the past year, McDonald’s holds a special place in my heart. Growing up, going to McDonald’s was a big deal. Obtaining the newest toy from the McDonald’s happy meal was an important thing to me as a child. This bribery earns McDonald’s a place in my heart for all of eternity. Plus, as I have mentioned before, they have THE BEST vanilla ice cream in the land.

All these rivalries are important in American society. These companies push each other to one up one another causing society to grow. Healthy competition never hurts anyone. This is why I have to watch underdog companies rise to the occasion and clean house. With this being said, go Panthers!
