Violet Speirs

Violet Speirs passed away on July 31, 2024, at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer, IA. She was born on March 30, 1924, to William and Fannie (Alcorn) Montgomery. She was 100 years old. She graduated from Traer High School in 1941. On December 8, 1952, Violet married David Speirs at the Little Brown Church in Nashua; he passed away in 2003.

Violet had a goal in life, which was to live to be 100 years old. Well, she did just that, and during her 100 years of life, it was a remarkable journey. When Violet was 2 years old, her mother passed away. So it was a hard beginning to her life. When she was 12, she wanted to make a pie, so she called a neighbor lady, and she taught her how. This began Violet’s love for cooking and baking. She loved to cook and host all the holidays at her home and loved being surrounded by her family.

When Violet got married, she enjoyed helping her husband in the field, hauling grain and running the tractor. Violet even found time to plant a garden and raise flowers. She loved geraniums, petunias and marigolds. When the garden was ready, she canned what she grew. These were the little things she enjoyed when she had a spare moment. Because of her Irish heritage, Violet was also a huge fan of Danny O’Donnell and was fortunate enough to see him in concert.

Violet was such a hard worker and learned this at a very young age surviving the Depression, but one of the best qualities that she instilled on her family was being a role model, and living every day like it was your last. Even though Violet was a busy lady, she always made time to read the Bible and was a member of Amity Presbyterian Church, rural Reinbeck.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David; one grandson, Corey Speirs; one granddaughter, Amy Speirs and two brothers, Kenneth and Victor Montgomery.

Violet is survived by her four sons: Bill (Donna) Speirs, of Clarion, Russell (Sharon) Speirs, of Traer, Ron Speirs, of Traer, and Don Speirs, of Traer; two grandchildren, Kevin Speirs, of Clarion, and Sara (Neil) O’Brien, of Traer; three great grandchildren: Avery Weisinger, of Cedar Falls, and Liberty and Ella O’Brien, of Traer; and extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed towards the family for a memorial to be determined at a later date.

The service for Violet will be held on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 11:00 am at Amity Presbyterian Church, rural Reinbeck, with burial at the Buckingham Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
