Richard Coleman
Richard George Coleman was born on May 10, 1932, in Hartford, Connecticut. He grew up in Branford, Connecticut and graduated from Branford High School in 1950. Richard served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1950-1955 and 1958-1962, during the Korean Conflict. On August 22, 1964, Richard was united in marriage to Betty Snow in Jakarta, Indonesia. The couple made their home in Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East before finally settling in Traer in 2004. Richard worked as a General Services Officer for the U.S. Department of State, Foreign Service, retiring in 1984 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Kubik-Finch Post 142 and enjoyed visiting with the friends he made in Traer. Richard died at the age of 88 on February 19, 2021, at Glenwood Place in Marshalltown. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jane Steele Coleman and a sister, Eleanor. Richard is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Sergeant Major Kelly (Sheri) Coleman of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Colonel Daniel (Sara) Coleman of Belton, Missouri; a daughter, Ms. Wendy Coleman of Wilmette, Illinois; and six grandchildren. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at 11:00 AM, at Buckingham Cemetery near Traer with military rites conducted by the Traer American Legion.
